Year 9 English - Lord of the Flies

This half-term, Year 9 have been reading and studying ‘Lord of the Flies’ in their English lessons. If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading it before, ‘Lord of the Flies’ is a novel by William Golding, written in 1954. It is about a group of boys who are marooned on an island, and how they manage to survive and interact with one another during this time.

Whilst they were studying the novel, Year 9 were tasked with creating a realistic version of the island, labelled with relevant quotations, for homework. Many of the students rose to the challenge and there were some absolute masterpieces submitted, as you can see in the photos.

Although lots of the islands themselves were fantastic, the most important part of this task was finding the quotations to label their island. Being able to choose relevant quotations when writing about a text is incredibly important, and through this activity Year 9 have begun to independently test out this skill.

The students have thoroughly enjoyed studying ‘Lord of the Flies’, and it has been a pleasure to teach them all this semester.

Happy Holidays!
