The IB Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma (IBDP) was established to provide students with a balanced education facilitating geographic and cultural mobility and to promote international understanding.

It is a broad curriculum in which students study 6 subjects, 3 at a higher level and 3 at a standard level, with all students having to do one Math, one Science, one language and literature subject, one language acquisition and one Humanities subject. All students have the choice to then either select one Arts subject or a second Science or Humanities subject. All students must complete the IBDP core consisting of Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS). It is the breadth of curriculum and the skills students are able to develop, that makes the IBDP such an attractive choice for students and for universities seeking scholarly candidates. Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of their subjects and be able to apply and evaluate that knowledge in examinations. However, they also develop research and essay writing skills as well as having their thoughts challenged by abstract theories and concepts about how knowledge is constructed in the first place (TOK).

The IBDP is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education. It enjoys a high level of respect and recognition among the world’s higher education institutions and for students, success in the IBDP often results in advanced standing, course credit scholarships and other admission related benefits at many universities. IBDP students equipped with research, critical thinking and reflective skills and practices, are strongly prepared for university rigour and consistently perform well in terms of university success factors, including results and completion of four year undergraduate degree programmes.
