Improving Students' Speaking Skills In Bahasa Melayu

Speaking in Malay can be a difficult skill because students are afraid in making mistakes when they try to speak. Some students do not know how to express their ideas, language, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation in their communication with the people. Here, is why I ask students to make individual presentation:

· They are ready to present the title given by the teacher using PowerPoint slides

· Students identify key stages of the example presentation – greeting, introduction, main points in order of importance, conclusion

· Focus on linking and signalling words('Selamat sejahtera cikgu dan kawan-kawan”, “Selain itu …”, “Hari ini saya akan membentangkan/ menceritakan tentang tajuk..”, “Sekian, terima kasih”, etc.).Students underline these in the transcript/place them in the correct order

· They learn how to use an attention grabber – quotation, question, visuals etc

· Students can support each other before, during and after the presentation

· Students practise what they are going to say and how

· Students prepare visuals (keep the time for this limited as too many visuals become distracting)

· Students deliver the presentations in front of the class, with the audience having an observation task to complete

· Shy students are able to build their confidence using Malay Language.

Presentations are a great way to practise a wide range of skills and to build the general confidence of our students at Repton.
