Native Mandarin Learners

It has been a purposeful and meaningful period for our Mandarin Native learners since we switched to online learning. All the students are familiar with the online learning routines and devices. This made learning more effective and participatory as we worked together to “recreate” the physical world in our online sessions by making time and space for our students to interact, discuss and challenge each other in our lessons.

Our young learners focused on their speaking and reading skills. We did group reading and explorations on Aesop’s fables. The Year 2 did a diorama play and mini-drama in class, based on the story they read. It was interesting to see how they edited and developed the story into modern context in their own spontaneous ways. The Year 3 challenged themselves to rewrite a more interesting ending, after role-playing the story. It was indeed heartening to see how the young learners apply the language, both in speech and writing, within the context given.

Our higher-level learners put across their horizons to the real world by knowing various artists, scientists and actors. Year 4 debated about satellites and China's latest space venture, and designed the “Heavenly Palace”. One can’t help but lament that their main concern lies with the availability of “computer games” in space. It is wonderful though that they drew layout designs and exercised discretion for every object they brought onboard. Year 5 and 6 learned more about actors and singers like Charlie Chaplin, Li Shi Zhen and Nie Er, and their impact on the artistic scenes. They made insightful dialogues based on the life experiences of these personalities. I was amazed by the insightful questions raised by Year 6 in their mock-up interviews. They could be real reporters.

Coming to the end of the academic year, it is indeed sad that we had to send the students for vacation without meeting them. However, I am proud and heartened that everyone has made good progress since they started the year. This makes me excited to welcome all back for the next academic year.
