We are living in extraordinarily difficult times with online learning impacting how the children learn. We should always remember that children are expressive, powerful, competent and capable. The pandemic has changed our lives, but children should continue to be empowered through authentic, hands-on play and learning experiences during the time they do not have to be before a screen. We want to continue to foster children’s joy of learning through play. Learning through play is supported by science, experts and by parents and children themselves. Play is a child’s natural response to the environment around them. When children are manipulating objects, acting out roles or exploring materials, they are engaged in learning through play. They are allowed to actively construct, challenge and expand their own understanding through making connections to prior experiences. They investigate, ask questions, solve problems and engage in critical thinking. Play is responsive to each child’s unique learning style and capitalises on his or her inborn curiosity and creativity. It provides opportunities for learning in a context in which children are at their most responsive. Play expands intelligence, stimulates the imagination, encourages creative problem solving and helps develop confidence, self-esteem and a positive attitude towards learning. Have fun playing!
