The Curriculum

Repton Junior School follows the English National Curriculum and pupils’ progress and attainment is benchmarked against these standards. The English National Curriculum is split into two sections - Key Stage 1 (pupils from 5 – 7 years old) and Key Stage 2 (pupils form 7 – 11 years old)

English

English as taught in the National Curriculum promotes high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language. A love of literature is developed through a strong focus on the teaching of reading and exposure to a range of quality texts.

The curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Read confidently, fluently and with good understanding
  • Develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • Acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • Write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • Use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
  • Are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate

For children whose first language is not English and for whom a little extra support is beneficial, a support programme is in place designed to help pupils develop vocabulary and skills and grow in confidence.

Mathematics

Mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils are required to move fluently between mathematical ideas. The programmes of study are organised into distinct domains, but pupils make connections across mathematical ideas enabling them to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving sophisticated problems. Pupils are also called upon to apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.

The aim for mathematics is to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Are able to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
