English as an Additional Language

This week in distance learning English as an Additional Language (EAL) we have been focusing on the nuances of English grammar. It is the rules in a particular language for changing the form of words and joining them into sentences. Students realised that grammar is the glue that holds the sentences together! English grammar is the way in which meanings are encoded into words. Syntax is the way that words and phrases are put together to form sentences in a language, and the term semantics refers to the meaning of words and phrases that are arranged with that structure.

The class agreed that grammar is extremely important because it is the structure of words, phrases, clauses, sentences as well as the structure of whole texts.
