Year 1 Celebrated Book Day

The 5th of March was a special day in Year 1, not only was it the last day of online learning but we also celebrated Book Day. In the UK, Book Day is celebrated every first Thursday in March and World Book Day is also an annual event on the 23rd of April. We celebrate authors, readers, illustrators and books. It also showcases how much we love books! Even while we were still having our online lessons, the children dressed up as their favourite book characters and engaged in fun activities to celebrate Book Day.

The children are always surrounded by books and reading. We take pride in our intensive phonics program in school. There is emphasis on the importance of teaching phonics in establishing fundamental reading skills in early childhood. Early phonics skills are advanced with a rich reading curriculum throughout the school years that helps improve reading skills.

New research shows that people who were taught to read by receiving explicit instructions experienced a dramatic improvement compared to learners who discovered this relationship naturally through the reading process. When it comes to learning to read, it suggests that explicit instruction - a phonics teaching method in which the relationship between sound and spelling is taught directly and systematically; is more effective than self-discovery through reading. Early phonics instruction allows children to gain understanding and reading experience over time.

The provision of evidence-based instructional methods has never been more important. A lot of research in the science of reading highlights the significance of explicit instruction in ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to develop strong reading skills. If we take advantage of the strong evidence based around what helps children learn to read, we can support children to go on to become more confident and skilled readers.
